Have you ever noticed how most people appear to be always on edge?
Consider the driver across the lane wearing a fixed grim expression on his or her face; or that lady frowning at you just because your eyes have just accidentally met.
I invite you to take time to look at people’s faces and you will realize that majority of them are unhappy. Some have permanent frowns affixed to their faces while others have glazed eyes that appear to stare blankly into nothingness. Others are so tense that a simple ‘hi’ would startle them out of their wits.
Unhappiness Leads to Poor Health
The impact of unhappiness on people’s health is unmistakable; and many a doctor have enriched themselves from treating stress-related ailments such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, stomach ulcers, etc.
Lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity are mostly a result of stress and unhappiness. Unhappy people tend to take out their frustrations on food, especially sugary foods and drinks. As a result, their sugar levels rise to dangerous levels.
Unchecked, an unhappy lifestyle not only leads to poor health, but in a number of cases even to death.
The Secret to Happiness, Health and Wealth
Today I want to show you a secret. It is a secret that so many happy and prosperous people have known for centuries.
Let me give you a hint.
The secret to happiness is not wealth. If you are busy clocking in time in pursuit of the dollar, it’s time to slow down and ask yourself if having more money has made you happy.
The cruel reality of life is that although wealth rightly applied can be a source of great happiness and satisfaction, by itself it does not guarantee happiness.
While he lay on his deathbed, Steve Jobs is reported to have said: “non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person into a twisted being, just like me. God gave us the senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions brought about by wealth. The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me. What I can bring is only the memories precipitated by love.”
And now, let me give you the secret to happiness. The only way we can have memories that are precipitated by love – memories that will last forever – is by sharing.
Steve Jobs grew up at the same time Bill Gates was growing up. It was during this time that Oprah Winfrey was also finding her way around the media industry. All of them were growing up around the same time. All of them experienced breathtaking success in their businesses.
But while Oprah and Bill Gates spent huge fortunes helping others through various causes, Steve Jobs considered giving a dollar harder than making one. To him, giving to the poor was a waste of money.
Well, Jobs is many years gone while Bill and Oprah are still happily sharing their wealth in exchange for health, happiness and contentment.
The Power of Sharing
All of life is about giving to others and to the universe. We are rewarded with a long, happy life as we share the gifts that life has blessed us with. God rewards us with intangible and tangible blessings that cannot be exchanged for money and worldly resources. But these rewards are activated by our generosity to others and a willingness to bless others with what we have more than enough of.
And it is through sharing that God unlocks the gifts of love, health and wealth in our lives. This is a cyclical never-ending conduit of sharing and receiving. The more we give, the more we receive.
Resolve to share your way into happiness by spreading memories and acts of kindness that are precipitated by love.
When you make love your guiding principle, you will always look for opportunities to share the little, and the more, that God has put in your hands. And the more you share, the happier, wealthier and healthier your life becomes.
By sharing with others what God has given us, we are in effect placing our lives, our dreams and our aspirations in God’s hands. And as Martin Luther once said: “I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but that which I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess”.
