Multiple income streams… with a twist

When I first ventured into online marketing, my imagination was immediately captured by illusionary visions of grandeur that promised me overnight get-rich-quick success.

Well, needless to say, I am still pursuing meaningful online success over ten years later 🙁

This is not to say I have not made profits online. I have made some modest income online, but not enough to live the life I have always dreamed of.

When I started off with online marketing years ago, I accidentally chose an online company that had a proven online track record of over 10 years. The company went by a name that further fueled my visions of grandeur – Six Figure Income (SFI)! Somewhere down the line, SFI’s management realized that their name was giving new affiliates the wrong ideas. So, they changed it to Strong Future International and re-branded.

What I learnt from SFI during those early days was that to earn meaningful income, one needed to have multiple income streams that all drained onto one huge stream (the desired financial success).

What I did not realize then was that all these streams needed a lot of work; and the moment you took your attention away from one stream to concentrate on another, by the time you went back to check it, it had dried up!

You see, it is impossible to concentrate on too many strands at the same time. And yet, to make it online, one needs to have as many streams of income as possible.

One of the lessons I learnt early on in my online life was that whatever you are doing online, your website is your main product – not the products or services listed on it. And by website I am not referring to those gateway websites and affiliate urls that are actually links or sub domains of the parent company.

You see, marketing gateway websites or affiliate links is basically aimed at driving web traffic to the website of the parent company.

You cannot make any changes to a gateway website. It is not your website. Period.

Back to multiple income streams. Lately I have discovered that I had been doing online business all wrong by concentrating on marketing affiliate links directly. When you are marketing affiliate links directly, you are not building your own brand, but that of the company you are affiliated to. And yet online success is all about branding.

Now, consider this. Instead of marketing multiple affiliate links all over the place, what if you decided to concentrate on your main STREAM; your own website. Let me explain.

When you have your own website, you have full control. You can market whatever you want to market on it.

But this website must carry relevant useful and on demand content – and it must be a topic you are passionate about; your life’s mission – what gives you purpose and direction in life. That is your main stream. Find it and you will be on your way to online success.

When people accrue value to what you are doing, they will actually beg you to make them a part of your life. If your blog or website has sticky content, people will be banging on your website doors demanding to be let in. And this means one thing. TRAFFIC!

Traffic is the lifeblood of online success. When you have traffic, opportunities will come to you. Google and Yahoo will beg to be on your site – and they will pay you top dollar for it!

Affiliate companies will seek you out – and they will send you those affiliate commissions every month. By this time, you will not be living in utopia; you will actually be living the life you’ve always imagined.

This is why it is important to concentrate on your website – your main stream. Focus all your attention and your marketing on it.

Multiple income streams will naturally flow from your main stream. And your work is to get your stream overflowing with traffic – which will then feed off into your other sub streams such as Google Adsense, affiliate links, MLMs, etc. The beauty of this approach is that you will not have to market your affiliate links directly. All you have to do is to place these links on your website and then encourage your website visitors to take a look. Period.

I hope this article will help you to refocus your online marketing strategy and make the shift to developing your own website; your real product in online marketing.
